Bakery Box Sizes: Inside Dimensions for Donut, Cupcake and Cake Boxes

Bakery Box Sizes: Inside Dimensions for Donut, Cupcake and Cake Boxes

Quick answer

Size a bakery box from the baked product, not from a catalogue name. A ring donut is commonly 3 to 3.5 in (75–90 mm) across, so a 6-donut box usually lands around 9–10 × 6–7 in inside and a 12-donut box around 13.5–14.5 × 9.5–11 in, with 2.25–3.5 in of height depending on filling and topping. Cupcake boxes are typically about 4 in tall inside and need a cavity insert whenever cupcakes are frosted. Cake boxes are commonly 1 to 2 in wider than the cake board and at least 1 in taller than the finished cake. Treat every figure here as a starting range and confirm on a sample with your own product.

Why bakery boxes need their own sizing rules

Bakery products are soft, sticky and decorated on top, so the box must protect the surface as much as the sides. Glaze, buttercream and sprinkles mark the lid if the inside height is short, and round items slide into each other if the base is too generous. A general takeaway sizing approach (covered in our takeaway box size guide by menu item) does not account for decoration height or the count-based layouts bakeries sell. The table below is a working reference for the most common bakery formats.

Donut boxes: count, grid and height

Work out the box from three numbers: the widest donut you sell, the grid (3 × 2 for six, 4 × 3 for twelve) and the tallest topping. Multiply the donut diameter by the number of donuts along each side, then add roughly 0.25–0.5 in of total play so the donuts can be placed without scraping the glaze. Raised glazed donuts are commonly around 1.5–1.75 in tall, while filled donuts and those with heavy toppings, cereal or whole pieces of fruit can reach 2–2.5 in or more, so a single shallow box rarely suits a full menu. Many bakeries keep one standard-height dozen box and a deeper version for specialty donuts.

If you sell oversized or “gourmet” donuts at 4 in or more, do not force them into a standard dozen footprint; the box gets too large to carry and the base bows. A 6- or 9-count box for large donuts is often more practical.

Cupcake boxes: why the insert matters more than the box

A standard cupcake base is commonly about 2 in (50 mm) across at the bottom of the liner and wider at the top, and a frosted swirl can bring total height close to 3.5 in. A box about 4 in tall inside is the usual starting point; very tall piped frosting may need 4.5–5 in. The insert does the real work: a board tray with punched holes, typically sized around the liner base, stops cupcakes from tipping and keeps frosting off the walls. Specify the hole diameter from your liner size (standard, jumbo or mini) and confirm on a sample, because a hole that is a few millimetres too large lets the cupcake rock during transport. For more on insert materials and fit, see our packaging insert and inner tray guide.

Cake boxes: board size plus clearance

Cakes are sized by the cake board, not the cake. Measure the board diameter or side, then add about 0.5–1 in per side so the board can be lifted in and out. For height, measure the finished cake including decorations and add at least 1 in. Tall layered cakes, toppers and tiered cakes usually need a taller box or a box with an extended lid, and some bakeries use a separate base and lid so a decorated cake can be lowered in from above rather than slid in from the side.

Decision rules: insert, window or neither

  • Choose a cavity insert when items are frosted, round-bottomed or able to tip: cupcakes, macarons, filled pastries and tall individual desserts.
  • Skip the insert for flat, stable items like ring donuts, cookies and bars; a food-safe liner sheet is often enough to manage grease.
  • Choose a window when the product sells on looks and the box sits on a counter or shelf. A window also lets staff check the order without opening the lid.
  • Skip the window for delivery-heavy channels, warm products that steam, or when you want to keep printing area for the brand.
  • Ask for a grease-resistant inner surface for glazed, fried or butter-rich products; the level should be agreed on a sample with your product.

What to send in an RFQ

  1. Product type, count per box and layout (for example 4 × 3).
  2. Measured diameter and height of your largest item, including toppings or frosting.
  3. Inside dimensions, labelled as inside (see how to measure inside and outside box dimensions).
  4. Insert requirement: hole size, number of cavities, and whether it is a separate piece.
  5. Window size and position, if any.
  6. Box style (tray with lid, one-piece lock corner, tuck top or gable), board preference and whether a grease-resistant inner surface is needed.
  7. Quantity per size; custom orders start from 500 PCS.

Common mistakes

  • Ordering from a supplier’s nominal size without asking whether it is inside or outside.
  • Measuring an unfrosted test bake instead of a finished, decorated product.
  • Using one dozen box for both ring donuts and filled donuts.
  • Specifying a cupcake insert without checking it against the actual liner size.
  • Adding a large window to a box that is too thin to stay rigid when carried.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a dozen donut box?

A 12-donut box is commonly around 13.5 to 14.5 inches long and 9.5 to 11 inches wide inside, in a 4 by 3 layout, with 2.25 to 3.5 inches of height depending on toppings. Confirm on a sample with your largest donut.

How tall should a cupcake box be?

About 4 inches of inside height is a common starting point for frosted cupcakes. Very tall piped frosting may need 4.5 to 5 inches.

Do cupcake boxes need inserts?

In most cases yes. A punched insert sized to the liner base stops cupcakes from tipping and keeps frosting off the box walls.

How much bigger than the cake should a cake box be?

A common rule is about 0.5 to 1 inch per side larger than the cake board and at least 1 inch taller than the decorated cake.
