Cosmetic Packaging Materials: Boxes, Pouches, Tubes and Label Guide

Cosmetic packaging must do three jobs simultaneously: protect the product from contamination and degradation, communicate brand values through material and finish, and meet regulatory requirements for ingredient disclosure and safety warnings. The right packaging material choice affects unit cost, shelf life, unboxing experience, and sustainability positioning.

Folding Cartons for Cosmetics

Most cosmetic secondary packaging (the outer box) uses folding carton board in one of three grades:

• SBS (solid bleached sulfate) 300–400gsm: Bright white, smooth surface for fine print; ideal for serums, perfume, skincare sets
• FBB (folding box board) 300–350gsm: Lighter weight with good stiffness; used for mid-range cosmetics where cost efficiency matters
• Duplex/coated duplex 300–400gsm: Lower cost, grey back; used for inner cartons not visible to consumers

For prestige cosmetics, a rigid box (greyboard 1.5–2.5mm) with a premium outer wrap replaces the folding carton entirely. Rigid boxes communicate luxury that folding cartons cannot match.

Flexible Pouches for Cosmetic Products

Sheet masks, single-use samples, face creams and hair treatments are commonly packaged in flat or three-side-seal flexible pouches. The laminate must be compatible with water-based and oil-based cosmetic formulas:

Labels for Cosmetic Primary Packaging

Labels on bottles, jars and tubes are the primary print carrier for ingredient lists and regulatory information. Key label material choices:

• BOPP white gloss: Waterproof, bright, excellent print quality — standard for bottles and jars
• BOPP clear: No-label look on clear glass or PET bottles; ingredients appear directly on the glass
• Kraft paper label: Natural/eco aesthetic; requires water-resistant coating for wet environments
• Foil labels: Metallic appearance for premium serums; hot stamped or metallized paper

EU and US Cosmetic Labelling Requirements

Both the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC 1223/2009) and US FDA require: product name, net contents, ingredient list (INCI names in descending order), nominal quantity, country of manufacture, name and address of responsible person, period after opening (PAO symbol), batch code, and any special precautions. EU requires INCI; US requires INCI for domestic products. Design artwork with enough space for all regulatory text before artwork approval.
