Eco-Friendly Packaging Options: Recycled, Biodegradable and FSC Materials

Sustainable packaging has moved from a marketing differentiator to a procurement requirement. Major retailers including Walmart, Tesco, Target and Amazon all have published packaging sustainability targets that directly affect their supplier packaging specifications. Understanding which eco claims hold up under scrutiny — and which do not — helps buyers choose materials that satisfy both marketing goals and supply chain reality.

Recycled Content Materials

Post-consumer recycled (PCR) content in packaging board is one of the most credible sustainability claims because it has a measurable, verifiable content percentage. Key options:

• Recycled kraft paper (100% PCR): Brown, unbleached; good for mailer boxes, shipping bags, outer wraps. Lower burst strength than virgin kraft but acceptable for most non-heavy applications.
• Recycled folding carton board: 50–80% PCR content available; colour tends towards grey-brown on uncoated surfaces; print quality slightly below virgin SBS but acceptable for secondary packaging.
• rPET film: Recycled PET for flexible packaging; same barrier properties as virgin PET; certified by GRS (Global Recycled Standard) by third-party auditors.

Biodegradable vs Compostable: Key Differences

FSC Certification

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification confirms that the paper or board used in your packaging comes from responsibly managed forests. FSC has two relevant claims: FSC 100% (all fibre from FSC-certified forests) and FSC Mix (a blend of FSC-certified, recycled and controlled wood). Key limitations: barrier performance is lower than conventional BOPP/VMPET/PE (typical shelf life 6–9 months for dry goods); seal strength is slightly lower; and the material requires industrial composting infrastructure to actually decompose — home disposal in landfill results in the same outcome as conventional plastic. Use compostable flexible packaging when your customers have access to industrial composting collection.
