Sustainable packaging has moved from a marketing differentiator to a procurement requirement. Major retailers including Walmart, Tesco, Target and Amazon all have published packaging sustainability targets that directly affect their supplier packaging specifications. Understanding which eco claims hold up under scrutiny — and which do not — helps buyers choose materials that satisfy both marketing goals and supply chain reality.
Post-consumer recycled (PCR) content in packaging board is one of the most credible sustainability claims because it has a measurable, verifiable content percentage. Key options:

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification confirms that the paper or board used in your packaging comes from responsibly managed forests. FSC has two relevant claims: FSC 100% (all fibre from FSC-certified forests) and FSC Mix (a blend of FSC-certified, recycled and controlled wood). For B2B buyers, requesting FSC-certified packaging from your supplier requires that the supplier holds FSC Chain of Custody (CoC) certification.
