Flexible packaging performance is determined by its laminate structure — the specific combination of films bonded together to create the final bag or pouch wall. Understanding what each layer does allows buyers to specify the right structure for their product rather than relying on a generic "standard" that may offer too much or too little barrier protection.
A typical 3-layer flexible packaging structure serves three distinct functions:

Certified compostable flexible packaging uses PLA (polylactic acid) as the outer layer and PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate) as the sealant. These structures are certified to EN 13432 or ASTM D6400 for industrial composting. Barrier performance is lower than conventional structures — OTR approximately 300–500 cc/m²/day; WVTR approximately 100–200 g/m²/day. Suitable for short shelf-life dry goods.
Products that require heat sterilisation (retort pouches) need structures that withstand 121°C for 30–60 minutes without delaminating or losing barrier integrity. Retort-grade sealant must be CPP (cast polypropylene) or retort-grade PE. A typical retort structure: PET/AL foil/CPP. After retort processing, the pouch is safe for ambient storage without refrigeration — used for wet pet food, ready meals, baby food.
