Hot foil stamping — also called hot stamping or foil blocking — applies a metallic or holographic film to packaging using heat and pressure. The result is a crisp, high-contrast metallic element that no printed ink can replicate. It is used on luxury cosmetics, spirits, confectionery, jewellery packaging and any product where the packaging needs to communicate premium positioning.
How Hot Foil Stamping Works
A metal die engraved with the desired graphic is heated to 80–130°C. A roll of foil — a carrier film coated with a release layer, a metallic/pigment layer and an adhesive layer — is sandwiched between the die and the substrate. Pressure and heat cause the metallic layer to transfer from the carrier film to the substrate. The result is a precisely defined metallic area with crisp edges.

Die Costs and Amortisation
Foil stamping requires a custom engraved metal die for each unique graphic. Die cost ranges from USD 80–300 per die depending on size and complexity. The die is a one-time cost amortised across all production runs. For a buyer producing 2,000 boxes per year with a USD 150 die, the amortised die cost is USD 0.075 per box — negligible against the premium positioning the foil delivers.
Design Guidelines
- Minimum positive element (foil on dark background): 0.5pt line or 0.3mm detail
- Minimum reverse element (dark on foil): 1pt line or 0.4mm detail
- Recommended area per stamp: keep under 30cm² for consistent pressure distribution
- Registration to print: ±0.3mm tolerance for foil-to-print registration
- Avoid large solid foil areas over emboss — combine foil and emboss as sequential operations on separate dies
- Substrate must be smooth; heavy textured paper shows inconsistent foil adhesion
Foil Stamping vs Metallized Ink
Metallized inks (silver or gold inks) are sometimes proposed as a lower-cost alternative to foil stamping. However, metallized inks are noticeably duller and less crisp than genuine foil. For a product positioned as luxury, metallized ink will communicate a downgrade. If budget is the constraint, a small foil element (logo only) combined with high-quality process print often delivers better value than covering a larger area with metallized ink.
