How to Write Packaging Copy That Converts: Tips for Product Labels and Boxes

Practical copywriting guide for product packaging — front panel hierarchy, benefit statements, claims compliance, call to action and readability at shelf.

Packaging copy must work in under 3 seconds — the average time a shopper glances at a new product on shelf. Good copy is not clever; it is clear. It answers: what is this, why should I care, can I trust it? Here is how to write copy that converts.

Front Panel Hierarchy

The front panel (principal display panel) must communicate in this order:

  1. Brand name: Large, distinctive, immediately readable from 1.5 m.
  2. Product name: What it is. Not what it does — what it IS. "Rosehip Face Oil" not "Age-Defying Cellular Renewal Essence."
  3. Variant / key differentiator: Fragrance, size, strength, edition.
  4. Primary benefit claim: One claim, maximum. "Fragrance-free" or "50% less plastic" — not both.

Benefit vs Feature Language

Features describe the product. Benefits describe the outcome for the user. "100% pure essential oil" is a feature. "Absorbs in 30 seconds, no greasy residue" is a benefit. Shoppers buy benefits. Use features to substantiate benefits, not as the headline.

Claims Compliance

Back Panel Structure

Top third: key benefits expanded (3–5 bullet points, 6–8 words each). Middle: usage instructions or ingredients. Bottom third: regulatory information (net weight, country of origin, barcode, certifications, manufacturer contact). Follow this structure consistently — it matches how consumers read packaging.
