Packaging Barcode Requirements: GS1, UPC, EAN and QR Code Placement Guide

How to place barcodes correctly on retail packaging — UPC-A vs EAN-13, minimum size, quiet zone, placement rules and QR code best practices.

An unreadable barcode at a retail checkout causes chargebacks, stock deletions and supply chain failures. Getting barcode placement right at the design stage costs nothing. Getting it wrong costs thousands. BestPackFactory reviews barcode placement on every artwork file before printing.

UPC-A vs EAN-13

UPC-A (12 digits) is used in the US and Canada. EAN-13 (13 digits) is used in Europe, Australia and most other markets. GS1 issues company prefixes; the brand owner adds item numbers and the check digit is calculated automatically. One GS1 company prefix covers both formats — EAN-13 is simply UPC-A with a leading "0".

Minimum Size

GS1 standard minimum for retail scanning: 80% of nominal (nominal = 37.29 mm wide × 25.91 mm tall for UPC-A). Below 80% increases scan failure rates. BestPackFactory recommends printing at 100% nominal on most packaging. On very small packs (under 50 cm² printable area) use a reduced-size GS1 DataBar instead.

Quiet Zone

A quiet zone (blank white space) must surround the barcode. For UPC-A: 2.31 mm left and right, 1.02 mm top and bottom. No text, images or colour may intrude into the quiet zone. Artwork designers commonly violate this rule. BestPackFactory's prepress team checks all files.

Colour Requirements

Bars must be dark (black, dark navy, dark green) on a light (white or cream) background. Avoid: reversed-out white bars on dark background, red bars (scanner lasers use red light — red bars appear white), yellow bars. Minimum contrast ratio: the scanner reads the difference between bar and space, not absolute colour.

Placement on Packaging

QR Code for Consumer Engagement

QR codes are not point-of-sale barcodes — they require a smartphone camera. Use QR codes for: product landing pages, authentication, recycling instructions, loyalty programmes. Minimum size: 20 mm × 20 mm for reliable decode at 30 cm scan distance. BestPackFactory can generate and embed GS1-standard QR codes (GS1 Digital Link) on request.
