What FSC Chain of Custody certification means for packaging buyers — how to verify certificates, request FSC-labelled packaging and use the FSC trademark.
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification is the most widely recognised sustainability standard in the packaging industry. For buyers whose customers, retailers or procurement policies require sustainable packaging, understanding what FSC certification means — and what it does not mean — is essential before making claims on packaging or in marketing communications.
FSC operates two levels of certification:
For a buyer to put the FSC logo on their packaging, their packaging manufacturer must hold FSC CoC certification, and the buyer's own company must also hold FSC CoC certification (or the manufacturer must be licensed to carry the trademark on behalf of the buyer).
| Claim | Meaning |
|---|---|
| FSC 100% | All material comes from FSC-certified forests |
| FSC Mix | Mix of FSC-certified, recycled and FSC Controlled Wood |
| FSC Recycled | All material is post-consumer or pre-consumer reclaimed fibre |
Every legitimate FSC certificate has a unique certificate number. Verify your supplier's FSC CoC certificate by searching the FSC certificate database at: info.fsc.org. Enter the certificate number or company name. The search results show the certificate scope (which products are covered), validity dates and the certifying body. If a supplier claims FSC but cannot provide a certificate number that validates in the FSC database, the claim is fraudulent.
To receive FSC-labelled packaging from BestPackFactory, specify in your purchase order: "FSC CoC certified; please include FSC logo and our FSC licence number [if you hold one] on the packaging artwork." BestPackFactory holds FSC® Chain of Custody certificate SGSHK-COC-332603 (issued by SGS Hong Kong Limited to Shenzhen Color Printing Paper Packaging Co., Ltd., valid to 14 December 2030), covering FSC 100%, FSC Mix and FSC Recycled paper and paperboard — verifiable at search.fsc.org. The factory will supply a Declaration of Availability (DoA) confirming that the materials used are FSC-certified. If you do not hold your own FSC CoC certificate, the factory may be able to trademark license the FSC logo to appear on your behalf — confirm this arrangement and associated fee with the factory. An FSC claim applies only where it is agreed before production and stated on the invoice and shipping documents.
If you regularly use FSC-certified packaging across multiple products, obtaining your own FSC CoC certificate is worth considering. Certification is conducted by an FSC-accredited certification body and costs USD 1,500–5,000 for the initial audit plus an annual maintenance fee. The certificate allows you to use the FSC trademark independently, make FSC product claims in all marketing communications, and gives procurement leverage with retailers that have FSC packaging requirements.
