Packaging for Electronics: ESD Protection, Drop Testing and Regulatory Markings

Electronics are damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD), physical shock and moisture. Packaging must address all three hazards simultaneously. BestPackFactory manufactures custom outer cartons for electronics brands; we coordinate ESD inner packaging through specialist partners.

ESD Protection Layers

A typical electronics packaging stack has three layers:

1. ESD shielding bag: Metalized polyester/PE laminate. Surface resistance: 10⁴–10¹¹ Ω/sq. Prevents static charge from building on the bag surface and shields the PCB from external electrostatic fields.
2. ESD foam: Pink or charcoal polyethylene foam. Conductive or dissipative. Holds the PCB or device in place and dissipates static safely. NOT to be confused with standard PE foam, which can generate static.
3. Outer carton: Standard corrugated or folding carton. Carries all required labelling and branding.

ISTA Drop Testing

Electronics companies typically require ISTA 2A or ISTA 3A testing for retail packaging and ISTA 6-AMAZON for FBA. BestPackFactory designs outer cartons to pass ISTA 2A by specifying correct flute and board grade. Third-party ISTA test labs in Shenzhen can test samples before production release.

Required Markings

• WEEE symbol (crossed-out wheelie bin): mandatory in EU for all electronic goods. Must appear on the product and/or packaging.
• CE marking: Required for electronics sold in the EU/UK.
• FCC ID: Required for US electronics that emit radio frequency energy.
• ESD warning symbol (hand touching triangle): recommended on ESD-sensitive components.

Moisture Protection

Humidity-sensitive components require desiccant packs (silica gel) inside the ESD bag, moisture barrier bag (MBB) with OTR <0.01 cc/m²/day, and a humidity indicator card (HIC) showing the bag was not breached in transit.
