Packaging for Pet Supplements and Treats: Compliance and Design Guide

The pet supplement and functional treat market has grown rapidly, bringing with it increased regulatory scrutiny. Packaging must protect the product, comply with AAFCO and FDA requirements, and appeal to pet owners who read labels as carefully as they read their own supplement labels.

US Regulatory Framework

Pet food and treats are regulated by the FDA under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The label must include: product name, species intended for, net weight, ingredient list (in descending order of predominance by weight), guaranteed analysis (min. crude protein, min. crude fat, max. crude fibre, max. moisture), manufacturer name and address, and feeding directions.

AAFCO Nutrient Profiles

If the product makes a "complete and balanced" claim, it must meet AAFCO Dog Food or Cat Food Nutrient Profiles. The label must state which AAFCO profile is met and whether this is substantiated by feeding trials or formulation. Products not meeting complete-and-balanced standards must be labelled "for intermittent or supplemental use only."

Packaging Options

• Stand-up pouch (SUP): Most common for treats, chews and powders. Barrier structure (BOPP/AL/PE or BOPP/PE) protects against moisture and odour. Resealable zip lock.
• Flat-bottom bag: Better shelf presence than SUP, stands upright without liquid product inside. Used for kibble supplements and training treats.
• Folding carton: Used for blister-packed chewable tablets and single-serve stick packs.

Child-Resistant Requirements
