Packaging for Retail: Planogram Compliance, POS and Merchandising

Retail packaging must satisfy two audiences simultaneously: the consumer who picks it up from the shelf, and the retail buyer who decides whether to stock it. Retailers have specific requirements for packaging dimensions, hanging features, price-point communication and planogram compliance that must be addressed before a packaging brief reaches the supplier. Getting retail packaging wrong means rejection by the buyer or poor sell-through on shelf.

Planogram Compliance

A planogram (POG) defines exactly how products are arranged on a shelf — which products go on which shelf, in which order, facing how many units deep. Retailers plan planograms months in advance and specify maximum and minimum packaging dimensions for each slot. Key constraints:

• Shelf depth: Most retail gondola shelves are 300–400mm deep; packaging must not exceed this depth including any protruding elements
• Facing width: The width of your package determines how many units fill one linear foot of shelf; narrower is generally better for high-turn SKUs
• Stack height: If stacking is required, confirm the packaging's BCT (Box Compression Test) rating supports the expected stack weight
• Weight: Some retailers specify maximum weight per shelf linear metre; heavy packaging reduces the number of facings allocated

Peg Hook and Hang Features

Many retail categories use pegged display — products hang from hooks rather than standing on a shelf. For peg-hung products, the packaging must have:

• Euro slot: Standard 6×38mm slot, 9mm from the top of the packaging; fits standard Slatwall and gondola peg hooks
• Hang hole reinforcement: The area around the hang slot must be reinforced (either by packaging thickness or adhesive-backed label reinforcement) to carry the product's weight without tearing
• Orientation: Product must face forward correctly when hung; balance point must be behind the hang slot

Price Point Communication

Retailers expect packaging to communicate price value at a glance. For value-positioned products, large net weight/count callouts and "value" or "savings" messaging. For premium products, quality materials and finishes speak louder than price messaging. For new listings, retailers often require a "New" flash or banner visible from the shelf edge — this should be planned as a permanent or tear-off element in the packaging design, not added as a sticker after production.

Retailer Private Label Requirements

If you are supplying packaging for a retailer's private label, the retailer will have detailed brand guidelines specifying approved colours, fonts, logo placement and mandatory elements (nutritional information, country of origin format, barcode placement). Request the retailer's packaging specification document before briefing your supplier — most major retailers (Walmart, Tesco, Carrefour, Coles) have published supplier packaging specifications available to approved suppliers.
