Packaging Freight from China: Air, Sea and Express Cost Comparison
How to choose between air, sea freight and express courier for packaging from China — cost benchmarks, transit times and when to use each.
Shipping custom packaging from China is one of the largest variable costs in a packaging procurement programme. The choice between express courier, air freight and sea freight can change the landed cost per unit by a factor of three to eight. Getting this decision right requires understanding not just the freight rate but the full landed cost including duties, insurance and handling fees.
The Three Shipping Options Compared

Understanding Volumetric Weight
Packaging is bulky and light — a shipment of paper boxes may weigh 200kg but occupy 1.5 cubic metres. Couriers and airlines charge on the higher of actual weight or volumetric (dimensional) weight. Volumetric weight = (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 5,000 (for express courier; 6,000 for air freight). A box of 50cm × 40cm × 40cm weighs 8.0kg volumetrically (50×40×40÷5000=16kg vol vs 8kg actual = pay for 16kg). This is why freight cost per unit for light packaging products is often 2–4× higher than the actual weight rate suggests.
Sea Freight: LCL vs FCL Decision
LCL (less than container load) consolidates your shipment with others in a shared container. The rate is per cubic metre (CBM). FCL (full container load) you rent an entire 20-foot or 40-foot container regardless of how much you fill it. The break-even between LCL and FCL is approximately:
- 20-foot container (28 CBM capacity): FCL is more economical above approximately 12–15 CBM
- 40-foot container (58 CBM capacity): FCL more economical above approximately 25–30 CBM
For packaging — which is often light and bulky — a 20-foot FCL may be reached by volume well before weight limits. Calculate both weight and CBM for your order.
Total Landed Cost Calculation
Freight rate is only one component of landed cost. Calculate:
- Freight rate (FOB to destination port or door)
- Origin charges (export customs clearance, inland transport to origin port): USD 100–300 per shipment
- Destination charges (import customs brokerage, port handling, delivery): USD 150–500 per shipment
- Import duties: typically 0–7.5% of declared value for packaging materials in US/EU; confirm with a customs broker
- Insurance: 0.3–0.5% of goods value
For small shipments under USD 800 (US de minimis threshold) or €150 (EU threshold), no import duties apply — an important consideration for sample and test orders.
