Print Prepress Checklist: 15 Steps Before Sending Artwork to a Packaging Factory

Prepress errors cause delayed production, reprints and wasted tooling cost. BestPackFactory's artwork team catches most errors before going to press — but if an error reaches the plate stage, it can add 3–5 days and USD 150–400 in plate rework costs. Use this checklist before submitting artwork.

File Format

1. ✓ File is a PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 (preferred) or layered AI/EPS
2. ✓ All fonts are embedded or converted to outlines (curves)
3. ✓ All linked images are embedded (not external links)

Resolution and Image Quality

4. ✓ All raster images are 300 dpi at final print size
5. ✓ No upscaled images (do not enlarge small images to fill space — pixelation occurs)
6. ✓ Photo retouching and colour correction done before sending

Colour Mode

7. ✓ Document colour mode is CMYK (not RGB — RGB colours shift on conversion)
8. ✓ Spot colours (Pantone) labelled correctly by PMS number
9. ✓ Total ink coverage does not exceed 300% (sum of C+M+Y+K) on any element

Bleed and Safe Zone

10. ✓ Bleed extends 3–5 mm beyond the cut line on all edges
11. ✓ All text and critical graphics are 3–5 mm inside the cut line (safe zone)
12. ✓ Dieline layer is on a separate, clearly labelled layer

Barcode

13. ✓ Barcode is dark bars on white background (not reversed, not red bars)
14. ✓ Barcode is at 100% GS1 nominal size or above (not below 80%)
15. ✓ Quiet zone is clear of all artwork elements
