Why Testing Before Production

The time to discover that your packaging fails a drop test is during prototype evaluation, not after a 10,000-unit run arrives in your warehouse. Physical testing at the prototype stage allows design modifications at the cost of one revised sample, rather than repackaging thousands of units. Major retailers, Amazon and airlines all require test reports for certain product categories before listing.

ISTA Test Protocols

Box Compression Test (BCT)

BCT measures the maximum load a corrugated box can withstand before it buckles. The test is performed by placing the closed, sealed box under a compression platen and increasing the load until failure. Key parameters:

Drop Test

Drop tests evaluate whether packaging protects the product when dropped from a defined height onto defined surfaces. ASTM D5276 is the standard method. Drop height depends on the gross weight of the packed unit:

The test samples are dropped onto each face, each edge (6 faces + 4 horizontal edges + 4 vertical edges) to identify the weakest failure mode.
