Sustainable Packaging Trends in 2026: What Brands Are Actually Adopting

Sustainability in packaging has moved from marketing aspiration to regulatory requirement. The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) mandates minimum recycled content percentages from 2030, with recyclability targets from 2025. In the US, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes are active in California, Colorado, Maine and Oregon. Here is what brands are actually changing in 2026.

Mono-Material Packaging

Multi-material laminates (e.g. BOPP/AL/PE) are difficult to recycle because the layers cannot be separated. The trend is toward mono-material structures — all-PE pouches, all-PP pouches, all-paper boxes — that fit into existing recycling streams. Trade-off: mono-PE pouches have lower oxygen barrier than foil laminates. Emerging oxygen scavengers and barrier coatings are closing this gap.

Paper-Based Barriers

Water-based coatings on paperboard now achieve oil and grease resistance (OGR) and moderate moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR) without plastics. Recycled Content Mandates

EU PPWR (proposed 2024, expected enforcement from 2030): minimum 30% recycled content in plastic packaging for consumer goods. California SB 54: 30% recycled content by 2028, rising to 65% by 2032. Paperboard packaging typically already exceeds these thresholds (SBS board: 0% recycled; CUK board: 70–90% recycled). Plastic pouches are where compliance investment is concentrated.
