Side-by-side comparison of rigid set-up boxes and folding cartons — cost, lead time, product types, and how to choose for your brand.
Choosing between a rigid set-up box and a folding carton is one of the most common packaging decisions brands face. Both have clear use cases. Getting it wrong either wastes money on over-engineering or damages the brand with packaging that feels cheap.
A rigid box (also called a set-up box) is constructed from thick greyboard (1.5–3 mm) wrapped in decorative paper. It cannot be folded flat. It arrives fully assembled. Examples: Apple iPhone box, luxury watch box, premium cosmetic gift set.
A folding carton is made from SBS (solid bleached sulphate) or CUK (coated unbleached kraft) board (270–400 gsm). It is die-cut and creased, then shipped flat. The brand or packer assembles (erects) it before filling. Examples: cereal boxes, medicine cartons, tea boxes.

| MOQ (BestPackFactory) | 500 pcs | 1,000 pcs |

| Ships flat? | No — bulky to ship | Yes — efficient to ship |
| Assembly required? | No | Yes (auto or manual) |
| Perceived value | Premium / luxury | Standard / functional |
| Best for | Gifts, luxury, electronics | FMCG, pharma, food retail |
Choose a rigid box when: retail price is over USD 40, the product is a gift or special edition, unboxing experience matters, or the brand occupies a premium tier. The higher cost is offset by higher perceived value and the ability to charge more.
Choose a folding carton when: the product is a commodity or FMCG item, volumes are high (10,000+ pcs), the retail price is under USD 25, or the packaging machine at your fulfillment center expects flat-shipped blanks.
