Spot UV Varnish on Packaging: Applications, Registration and Design Tips

Spot UV (ultraviolet) varnish is one of the most cost-effective ways to add visual drama to printed packaging. A high-gloss, raised coating applied precisely over selected design elements — a logo, product name, key image — creates a contrast between the coated area and the surrounding matte surface that catches light and draws the eye. It is widely used in cosmetics, food, beverage and luxury packaging.

Flood UV vs Spot UV

• Flood UV (full-surface UV gloss varnish): Applied to the entire printed surface; adds gloss and scratch protection uniformly; commonly replaces gloss lamination as a lower-cost option; no special artwork required
• Spot UV: Applied only to specified areas defined by a separate spot colour layer in the artwork; creates gloss islands on a matte background; requires a spot UV die or screen in addition to the regular printing plates

How to Specify Spot UV in Artwork

In your design file (Adobe Illustrator or InDesign), create a separate layer named "Spot UV" or "Die Cut UV". Fill the areas you want coated with a 100% coverage spot colour named "SpotUV" or "Varnish". This layer is used to create the flood coat screen or screen-print plate at the factory. Key rules:

• Spot UV layer should be 100% opacity — no gradients or transparencies
• Minimum feature size: 0.5mm line width for positive features
• Keep a 1mm clearance from die-cut edges to prevent varnish at trim
• Provide in Pantone spot colour or as a separate PDF layer clearly labelled

Registration Accuracy

Spot UV is printed as a separate pass over the already-printed and laminated substrate. Registration tolerance is ±0.3–0.5mm depending on substrate type and machine. For designs where the UV precisely outlines a printed element (e.g. UV exactly matching a logo shape), allow for this tolerance in design. If the UV extends 0.5mm beyond the printed element, the design reads as intentional and registration variation is invisible. If the UV is designed to align pixel-perfect with a printed edge, any tolerance shift is visible and undesirable.

Surface Combinations with Spot UV

Raised UV (3D UV / Dimensional UV)

Raised UV is a thick-build UV varnish applied in multiple coats to create a physically raised tactile element — a raised logo or pattern that can be felt as well as seen. It is more expensive than flat spot UV and requires more processing time, but creates a distinctive premium effect. Often used on wine labels, premium gift boxes and luxury cosmetics. Minimum raised height typically 0.2–0.5mm above the substrate surface.
