Stand-Up Pouch Barrier Materials: OTR, WVTR and Structure Guide
How to choose PET/AL/PE, MOPP/VMPET/PE and kraft structures for stand-up pouches based on product shelf-life requirements.
Stand-up pouches (also called doypacks) are the dominant flexible packaging format across food, beverage, pet food, coffee, cannabis, and personal care. Selecting the correct barrier material is the single most important technical decision in pouch design—it determines whether your product's shelf life, taste, aroma and safety requirements can be met.
Understanding Barrier Properties
Two numbers define a flexible packaging material's barrier performance:
- OTR (Oxygen Transmission Rate): Measured in cc/m²/24h at 23°C and 50% RH. Lower numbers mean better oxygen barrier. Products sensitive to oxidation (coffee, nuts, jerky) need OTR below 1.0 cc/m²/24h.
- WVTR (Water Vapour Transmission Rate): Measured in g/m²/24h at 38°C and 90% RH. Lower numbers mean better moisture barrier. Dry products (crackers, powders) need WVTR below 0.5 g/m²/24h.

Choosing the Right Structure for Your Product
Coffee
Roasted coffee demands a one-way degassing valve plus high oxygen barrier. The preferred structure is MOPP/VMPET/PE or PET/AL/PE. The valve is heat-sealed into the front face of the pouch, typically placed 35–55mm below the top seal. Side gusset flat-bottom style (also called K-seal) is standard for 250g and 500g pouches.
Pet Food (Dry Kibble)
Kibble is oily and prone to going rancid. Use MOPP/VMPET/PE (minimum 120µm total) or PET/AL/PE for premium lines. Puncture resistance is important—add a nylon layer (15µm) between outer printed film and sealant for sharp-edged kibble. MOQ 500 PCS, typically supplied flat-bottom with zipper and hang hole.
Cannabis / Mylar Bags
Child-resistant zipper (CR-certified to 16 CFR 1700.20) is a compliance requirement in most US states. Material is typically PET/AL/PE in 3.5g, 7g, 14g and 28g sizes. UV-blocking is provided by the aluminium layer; no additional UV additive is needed.
Liquid / Spout Pouches
Spout pouches for beverages, sauces and liquid products require a pre-applied Fitment (spout) with cap. The body is typically PET/AL/PE or NY/PE. Fill volume range: 50ml to 2L. Spout thread options: 28mm (standard), 38mm (wide-mouth), and custom.

- Product type and any known barrier-sensitive ingredients
- Finished pouch dimensions: W × H × bottom gusset (in mm)
