Container Rain: How to Protect Paper Boxes and Bags from Moisture in Sea Freight

Quick answer
Container rain is condensation: warm, humid air inside a sealed container cools as the ship moves through colder conditions or between day and night, and the moisture drips from the roof onto the cargo. Paper boxes and bags both absorb and release moisture, so they are sensitive to it. Prevention combines dry cargo and dry pallets, calcium chloride container desiccant sized for the container and route, kraft paper or a liner under the roof, pallet or carton polybagging where suitable, and clear wording in the purchase order. Confirm the plan with your freight forwarder before loading.

A shipment of printed boxes or paper bags can leave the factory in perfect condition and arrive with water stains on the top cartons, warped rigid boxes, curled bag handles or a musty smell. In many cases the container did not leak; the water came from inside it. This guide explains how container rain forms and what buyers can specify to reduce the risk. For choosing between air, sea and express shipping in the first place, see our packaging freight options guide.
How container rain forms
A closed container holds a fixed volume of air together with everything that can give off moisture: the cargo, pallets, dunnage and the timber floor. When the container is loaded in a warm, humid place, that air carries a lot of water vapour. As the outside temperature drops, at night or as the vessel moves into cooler waters, the steel roof and walls cool first. When they fall below the dew point of the air inside, water condenses on them and drips onto the top layer of cargo. When the temperature rises again, moisture evaporates and the cycle repeats over the voyage.
Paper and board are hygroscopic: they take on moisture from humid air and give it back when the air dries. That makes paper packaging both a victim and a source of moisture inside the container. Untreated or freshly treated wooden pallets can add a significant amount of water as well.
What moisture does to paper packaging
- Folding cartons and mailer boxes: warping, loss of stacking strength, water marks, ink or coating marks where cartons touch.
- Rigid boxes: wrap paper lifting, warped lids, mould on greyboard or adhesives, see our custom rigid boxes page for the construction.
- Paper bags: curling, softened handles and glue lines, staining on uncoated kraft.
- Master cartons: collapsed stacks once the corrugated softens, which then damages everything inside.
Protection measures compared
| Measure | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Calcium chloride container desiccant (hanging strips, poles or bags) | Absorbs moisture from the container air; commonly higher capacity at high humidity than silica gel or clay | Most long sea routes, humid loading ports, hygroscopic cargo such as paper |
| Silica gel or clay sachets inside cartons | Protects the air inside a single carton or bag | Small, high-value items; not a substitute for container desiccant |
| Dry, heat-treated or plastic pallets | Reduces the moisture brought into the container | All palletised loads; ask for dry pallets, not just treated ones |
| Kraft paper or roof liner over the top layer | Catches and spreads drips before they reach cartons | Any load of paper goods, especially the top tier |
| Polybag inside each master carton, or pallet top sheet and cover | Shields packaging from drips and direct contact | Paper bags, printed boxes and rigid boxes on long routes |
| Humidity indicator card or data logger | Records what happened, useful for claims and future planning | New routes, high-value shipments, recurring problems |
How much container desiccant?
There is no single official figure. Desiccant suppliers publish their own sizing guidance, and it varies with container size, route, season, voyage length and how much moisture the cargo and pallets carry. Published quantities differ widely between desiccant suppliers, so do not rely on a generic figure. Ask the desiccant supplier or your forwarder to size it for the actual shipment, and treat any figure as a starting point to adjust after the first shipments.
Placement matters as much as quantity. Container desiccants are usually hung on the side-wall corrugations or between pallets, near the upper part of the load where condensation forms, and must not be crushed or tipped, because spent calcium chloride turns into a liquid gel held in the bag.
Buyer checklist before loading
- Packaging must be dry when packed. Freshly glued rigid boxes and bags need time for water-based adhesives to dry before cartons are closed.
- Pack in suitable master cartons. Ask for polybags inside master cartons for paper bags and premium boxes on long routes.
- Use dry pallets. Heat treatment under ISPM 15 is a pest-control measure; it does not by itself guarantee low moisture. Ask for dry pallets or plastic pallets.
- Inspect the container. Check for holes, damaged door seals and a wet floor before loading; a light test from inside shows holes.
- Avoid loading in rain. Wet cartons and a wet floor add water you cannot remove later.
- Add desiccant and liners. Specify the type, quantity and position, and cover the top tier with kraft paper or a liner.
- Photograph the loading. Photos of pallets, desiccant and liners help with claims.
- Unload promptly at destination. Containers left standing in the sun or rain at the port continue to cycle moisture.
Purchase order wording you can adapt
Put the requirements in writing so they are part of the order rather than a verbal request. For example:
- "Goods to be packed dry, in master cartons with an inner polybag, on dry heat-treated or plastic pallets."
- "Container to be inspected for holes and a dry floor before loading. Do not load in rain."
- "Calcium chloride container desiccant, quantity and placement as agreed with the forwarder, plus kraft paper over the top tier."
- "Supplier to send loading photos showing pallets, desiccant and liner before the container is sealed."
Who supplies and pays for desiccant depends on your Incoterm; our Incoterms guide explains where responsibility passes. Any cost for desiccant, liners or polybags is confirmed in the quotation.
Common mistakes
- Relying on silica gel sachets in cartons to protect a whole container.
- Using pallets that are visibly damp or freshly treated.
- Stretch-wrapping warm, damp pallets tightly, which traps moisture against the cartons.
- Leaving the top tier uncovered under the roof, where drips land first.
- Choosing the cheapest unlined container for a long tropical route without any desiccant.

Frequently asked questions
What is container rain?
It is condensation inside a shipping container. Humid air cools when temperatures drop during the voyage, water condenses on the roof and walls, and it drips onto the cargo.
How much desiccant do I need for a 20 ft container?
There is no single official figure. Published quantities differ widely between desiccant suppliers, so do not rely on a generic figure. Ask the desiccant supplier or forwarder to size it for your shipment.
Are heat-treated pallets dry?
Not necessarily. ISPM 15 heat treatment is a pest-control measure. Ask specifically for dry pallets or use plastic pallets.
Should paper bags be polybagged for sea freight?
On long or humid routes a polybag inside each master carton is a common way to shield paper bags and printed boxes from drips. Make sure the goods are dry before they are bagged.
