Custom Packaging Landed Cost Calculator: What Buyers Must Include
Published August 10, 2026 · Buyer guide · By BestPackFactory
Quick answer
A usable landed-cost comparison adds product cost, tooling and plate charges, sampling, export cartons, inspection, freight, insurance, duties, brokerage and expected loss from damage or defects. Divide the total by the number of usable units delivered—not the quantity ordered.
Decision table
| Cost block | What to request | Common omission |
|---|---|---|
| Packaging | Unit price by quantity tier | Material or finish assumptions |
| One-time setup | Dieline, mold, plate or cylinder | Amortization across reorders |
| Logistics | Carton size, gross weight, CBM and Incoterm | Local delivery and brokerage |
| Quality risk | Sampling, inspection and defect allowance | Unusable units and rework |
Why the cheapest unit quote can become expensive
Two suppliers can quote the same box at different unit prices while using different board thicknesses, print processes, carton packing methods and freight assumptions. A low ex-factory price is not comparable with a delivered-duty-paid price. Ask every supplier to quote the same specification, quantity, destination and Incoterm, then normalize the numbers into one landed-cost worksheet.
A practical calculation method
Start with the production subtotal. Add one-time tooling and sampling, then export packing, inspection, freight, insurance, duty, tax and destination handling. Add a realistic contingency only where the route or specification is uncertain. Finally divide by accepted units after inspection. This makes hidden costs visible and helps buyers decide whether a higher unit price with better packing or lower defect exposure is actually cheaper.
Information needed before freight can be compared
Request finished pack dimensions, units per export carton, carton dimensions, carton gross weight, total cartons and total cubic volume. Freight forwarders price shipments using route, service level, chargeable weight or volume. If a supplier cannot provide a packing estimate, the landed-cost comparison is incomplete.
How BestPackFactory supports quote comparison
Send the packaging format, dimensions, quantity, artwork, finish, destination postal code and required delivery date. BestPackFactory can provide a project quotation and estimated export packing data so the buyer or freight forwarder can compare a consistent scope. Final duties and taxes remain subject to destination rules and customs classification.
Buyer checklist
- Use one specification sheet for every supplier
- Confirm Incoterm and destination
- Separate one-time and repeat-order costs
- Compare cost per accepted delivered unit
- Record carton dimensions and gross weight
Frequently asked questions
Is unit price enough to compare packaging suppliers?
No. Compare the same material, printing, finish, packing method, Incoterm and destination, including tooling and logistics.
What is the best Incoterm for a first order?
There is no universal best choice. Select an Incoterm based on your freight capability, need for cost visibility and destination customs requirements.
Can landed cost be final before production?
It is usually an estimate until final packed dimensions, weight, customs classification and route charges are confirmed.
