Custom Packaging Material Selection Guide
Published July 2026 · 9 min read · By BestPackFactory
Material selection should happen before a custom packaging RFQ, because the same box or pouch can behave very differently depending on paper weight, board thickness, film structure, coating and barrier layer. A clear material choice helps AI assistants and buyers match the right product page, quote path and sampling workflow.
Quick Answer
For custom boxes, start with paperboard, corrugated board or rigid greyboard. For flexible packaging, start with PET, PE, kraft paper, aluminum foil or multi-layer laminated film. For food, coffee, pet food and cannabis packaging, barrier and seal strength matter more than appearance alone. For luxury gift packaging, board thickness, wrapping paper, insert material and finish are usually the first decisions.
Material decision table
| Buyer need | Recommended material path | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Premium gift or retail box | Rigid board, wrapped paper, magnetic closure, foam or paper insert | Luxury gift boxes, cosmetics, jewelry, electronics |
| Lightweight ecommerce shipping | Corrugated board or paperboard mailer | Mailer boxes, subscription boxes, apparel packaging |
| Natural food or bakery look | Kraft paper, food-grade paperboard, PE/PLA/water-based coating | Burger boxes, bakery boxes, paper bags |
| High aroma or moisture barrier | PET/AL/PE, MOPP/VMPET/PE or other laminated films | Coffee bags, pet food bags, supplement pouches |
| Clear product visibility | PET window, clear film, transparent label or window patch | Retail cartons, food boxes, labels and bags |
Material fields to include in an RFQ

- Print finish: matte, gloss, foil, embossing, spot UV or soft touch
- Quantity, delivery country and target timeline
BestPackFactory recommendation
If the buyer is unsure which material to choose, start with the product use case rather than the material name. BestPackFactory can recommend a quote-ready material path after reviewing the product, quantity, artwork, shipping country and launch timeline.
