Pre-Roll Tube and Box Size by Cone Length: 84 mm, 98 mm and 109 mm

Pre-Roll Tube and Box Size by Cone Length: 84 mm, 98 mm and 109 mm

Quick answer

In the general market, 84 mm cones are commonly packed in tubes of about 90–98 mm, 98 mm cones in either a snug 98 mm tube or a roomier 116 mm tube, and 109 mm king-size cones in tubes of about 116–120 mm. Labelled tube lengths are usually outside sizes, so the usable inside length is a few millimetres shorter once the cap and base are allowed for. For boxes and multi-packs, size the insert slot to the tube (or to the bare cone) plus a small allowance, and confirm everything by test-fitting your filled, finished pre-roll on a sample.

Scope of this guide

This guide covers physical fit only: tube length, slot size and box dimensions. It does not cover legal labelling, child-resistance or other market rules, which differ by jurisdiction and change over time. For an overview of those topics, read our cannabis packaging compliance guide and confirm requirements with your own regulatory adviser.

Measure the finished pre-roll, not the paper

Cone sizes such as 84, 98 and 109 mm describe the paper cone before filling. The finished product can be shorter (after the tip is twisted or folded) or slightly longer (if a crutch or filter tip protrudes). Before you order tubes or boxes, measure ten finished pre-rolls from a real production run and note:

  • Overall length from filter tip to closed end.
  • Widest diameter, usually near the closed end.
  • Whether the closure is twisted, folded or packed flat, which changes how it sits in a tube.
  • Any glass, wooden or ceramic tip, which adds length and diameter.

Typical tube length by cone length

Cone length (paper)Common market nameTypical tube length (labelled)Notes
70 mmMini / “dogwalker”about 78–92 mmOften packed several per tube or in small boxes
84 mm1¼ sizeabout 90–98 mmA 98 mm tube leaves more headroom for longer twists
98 mm“98 special” or similar98 mm (snug) or 116 mm (roomy)Market practice is split; test both
109 mmKing sizeabout 116–120 mmLonger tubes are common with cork or glass-tip formats

Figures reflect general market practice and vary by tube maker, cap design and wall thickness. Confirm on a sample with your finished product.

Inside length versus labelled length

Tube makers commonly quote the overall outside height. The cap depth, base thickness and any inner lip reduce the usable inside length, often by a few millimetres. A finished 109 mm pre-roll may fit a 116 mm tube comfortably, while a tipped version of the same pre-roll may not. Always ask for the inside length and inside diameter, not only the product name. Single tubes commonly have an inside diameter in the mid-teens of millimetres; check it against the widest point of your filled cone, especially for infused or coated products, which are often thicker.

Too much headroom is also a problem: a loose pre-roll rattles, loses material at the twist and can crush the tip in transit. Aim for enough length to close the cap without pressing on the product, plus a few millimetres for variation between rolls.

Boxes for single tubes and multi-packs

Paper boxes are used in two main ways: as a printed outer around a single tube, or as a multi-pack that holds several tubes or bare pre-rolls in an insert.

  • Single-tube box: inside length about equal to the tube length plus a small allowance, commonly 1–3 mm; inside width and depth slightly larger than the tube diameter (or cap diameter, if wider).
  • Multi-pack of bare pre-rolls: common counts are 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10. Use a die-cut insert with individual slots so pre-rolls do not roll into each other. Slot width is typically sized to the widest diameter plus about 1 mm; slot length to the finished length plus a few millimetres.
  • Multi-pack of tubes: size the insert around the tube body and leave finger access to lift each tube out.
  • Flat packs and sleeves: slim slide or tuck boxes holding pre-rolls side by side are common for small counts; check the total width once wall thickness is added.

For paper tube construction options, see our paper tube packaging guide. A tuck end box dieline is a useful starting point for single-tube outers.

Decision rules

  • Choose the shortest tube that closes without touching the product after measuring your longest finished pre-roll.
  • Choose a 116 mm tube when one SKU family runs both 98 mm and 109 mm cones and you want one tube size; accept some extra headroom on the shorter cone.
  • Choose individual slots for any multi-pack of bare pre-rolls.
  • Choose a separate box size for tipped or infused pre-rolls rather than stretching a standard one.

What to send in an RFQ

  1. Cone size and measured finished length and widest diameter (ten samples).
  2. Tube type and its inside dimensions, if you are boxing an existing tube.
  3. Count per pack and preferred layout (side by side, stacked, or two rows).
  4. Box style, board and insert preference.
  5. Artwork status and any compliance panel space your adviser requires.
  6. Quantity per size; custom orders start from 500 PCS.

Common mistakes

  • Ordering tubes from the cone name without checking inside length.
  • Sizing a multi-pack from one hand-picked pre-roll instead of a production average.
  • Forgetting that caps are often wider than the tube body.
  • Using a single open cavity for a multi-pack, so pre-rolls shift and lose material.
  • Assuming a packaging size choice settles legal requirements; it does not.

Frequently asked questions

What size tube fits a 109 mm pre-roll?

A tube of about 116 to 120 mm labelled length is common in the market for 109 mm king-size cones. Check the inside length and test-fit your finished pre-roll.

Does an 84 mm pre-roll fit a 98 mm tube?

Usually yes. Tubes of about 90 to 98 mm are commonly used for 84 mm cones; the 98 mm tube simply leaves more headroom.

Is tube length measured inside or outside?

Tube makers commonly quote the outside height. The usable inside length is a few millimetres shorter once the cap and base are allowed for.

How do I size a multi-pack insert for pre-rolls?

Measure the widest diameter and finished length of several pre-rolls, then size each slot slightly larger, typically about 1 mm wider and a few millimetres longer, and confirm on a sample.
