Water-Activated Kraft Paper Tape vs Printed BOPP Tape: Which Seals Your Shipping Cartons Better

Water-Activated Kraft Paper Tape vs Printed BOPP Tape: Which Seals Your Shipping Cartons Better

Quick answer

Water-activated kraft paper tape (also called gummed tape) bonds into the carton fibres, so it is strongly tamper-evident, usually needs only one strip per seam and goes into paper recycling with the box; reinforced grades with fibreglass threads are the usual choice for heavier cartons. Printed BOPP tape is a plastic film with a pressure-sensitive adhesive: it needs no water or special dispenser, is fast to apply by hand, and gives a bright, glossy print, but it sits on the surface and adds plastic to the box. Choose paper tape for heavy, high-value or sustainability-led shipments packed at a fixed station; choose printed BOPP for flexible, low-setup packing and light to medium cartons.

Quick facts: Custom Printed Tape

  • Indicative unit price: about US$0.05–0.10 per piece. This is a guide, not a quotation: the final price depends on size, material, print colours, finish and order quantity.
  • MOQ: typically from 500 pcs per size and artwork; the confirmed minimum depends on material, print method and features and is stated on the quotation.
  • Lead time: Physical samples 5–7 working days after artwork is confirmed; bulk production 20–30 days after sample approval.

How each tape holds a carton shut

Water-activated tape (WAT) is kraft paper coated with a dry, usually starch-based adhesive. A dispenser wets the adhesive as the strip is cut; pressed onto the carton, the wet adhesive soaks into the board fibres and dries into a fibre-to-fibre bond. Removing it normally tears the box surface, which is why it is valued for tamper evidence. Non-reinforced WAT is paper only; reinforced WAT has fibreglass yarns laminated between paper layers for extra tensile and burst strength.

BOPP tape is biaxially oriented polypropylene film with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, commonly water-based acrylic or hot-melt synthetic rubber. It sticks on contact without activation. Hot-melt adhesives typically give a fast, aggressive initial grab, while acrylic adhesives typically age better and tolerate a wider temperature range. Branding is printed on the film, usually in one to three spot colours.

Side-by-side comparison

Tamper evidenceHigh; removal visibly damages the boxModerate; printed tape makes a re-tape easier to spot
Strips per seamUsually one strip along the centre seamOften one strip, with H-taping or extra strips on heavier boxes

Dust, cold and humidityBonds well to dusty or recycled board when correctly wetted; too much or too little water weakens the sealDust, very low temperatures and damp board reduce adhesion; adhesive type matters

End of lifePaper and starch adhesive normally go into corrugated recycling with the box; acceptance of reinforced grades varies by local systemPlastic film is normally screened out at the paper mill as a contaminant

Performance depends on the tape grade, carton board and packing practice, so confirm it on a sample with your real carton and contents.

Choosing by carton weight

Published tape-maker guidance is broadly consistent, though exact limits vary by grade and brand:

  • Light cartons, roughly up to 5 kg: non-reinforced paper tape or a standard-gauge BOPP tape both normally work.
  • Medium cartons, roughly 5–15 kg: a heavier non-reinforced grade can hold a well-filled box on a pallet; for individual parcel shipping, a light reinforced paper tape or a heavier-gauge BOPP tape is the safer choice.
  • Heavy cartons, roughly 15–30 kg and above, or double-wall boxes: reinforced paper tape in a medium or heavy grade, often in a wider strip, is the common recommendation.

Treat these as starting ranges, not guarantees. Run a drop or shake test on a packed sample; see our packaging testing standards guide for common methods.

Choosing by packing volume and workflow

Paper tape suits a fixed packing bench where a dispenser can sit permanently; once staff are trained, one wetted strip per seam is quick. It is less practical for mobile packing, pop-up events or low daily volumes. BOPP tape suits mixed or occasional packing, hand-held dispensers and most automatic case sealers. If you already run a case sealer, check whether it accepts paper tape before switching.

Choosing by sustainability goal

If your goal is a box that customers can recycle in one piece without removing tape, paper tape is the simpler story, because the paper and starch adhesive go into the same stream as the carton. Be precise in claims: reinforced tape contains fibreglass, and local acceptance varies, so describe it accurately. BOPP is lighter per metre and uses less material per roll, but it is plastic and is removed during repulping. Avoid labelling any tape “compostable” or “plastic-free” unless the supplier provides evidence for that exact product.

Branding: what prints well

Both tapes carry a repeating logo or message. BOPP gives sharper, brighter colours and works with clear film, which is useful on printed mailers. Kraft paper tape gives a natural, matte look that matches brown corrugated shipping boxes; fine detail and light colours look softer on kraft, so bold one- or two-colour artwork works best. Keep the repeat short enough that the logo appears on each seam of your smallest box, and keep text clear of the area that is cut at the box edge.

What to send in your RFQ

  • Tape type (paper, reinforced paper or BOPP) and width
  • Typical carton size, board type and packed weight
  • Dispenser or case sealer model, if any, and roll core size it needs
  • Logo artwork, colours and repeat length
  • Storage and shipping conditions, such as cold rooms or humid warehouses
  • Quantity per design and delivery country

Options are shown on our custom printed tape page; tape grade, roll length and adhesive are confirmed in the quotation. For box construction, see our custom shipping box guide.

Common mistakes

  • Switching to paper tape without budgeting for dispensers or training.
  • Using non-reinforced paper tape on heavy single parcels.
  • Choosing a hot-melt BOPP tape for cold-chain or very hot storage without testing.
  • Calling a box “fully recyclable” while sealing it with plastic tape.
  • Approving tape artwork without checking the logo repeat against the smallest carton.

Frequently asked questions

Is water-activated tape stronger than BOPP tape?

It bonds more permanently because the adhesive soaks into the carton fibres, and reinforced grades are commonly used for heavy boxes. Heavier-gauge BOPP tapes can also seal heavier cartons, so test both on your actual box.

Is kraft paper tape recyclable?

Non-reinforced paper tape with a starch-based adhesive normally goes into corrugated recycling with the box. Reinforced tape contains fibreglass, and acceptance varies by local recycling system.

Do I need a special dispenser for water-activated tape?

Yes. The adhesive must be wetted evenly, so a manual or electric gummed tape dispenser is normally used. BOPP tape only needs a hand dispenser or case sealer.

What is the MOQ for custom printed packing tape?

At BestPackFactory the MOQ is 500 PCS per design. Tape grade, width, roll length and colours are confirmed in the quotation.
